Category Rules

ELIGIBILITY: Submissions may be fiction, documentary, animation or experimental of any length. Only films completed no more than 18 months prior to the 34th Altantic Film Festival will be considered for admission. Preference will be given to submissions that have not been distributed theatrically or broadcast on television in the Atlantic region prior to the 2014 Festival. The Atlantic Film Festival program is generally grouped into six programming streams beginning with our regional and geographic groupings: Atlantic Focus (Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Newfoundland), Canada & the World: Documentaries and Features. Niche programs include – Late Shift (late night horror and cult films), Frame x Frame (animation for adults), ViewFinders @ AFF (children & families), and Special Programs (retrospectives).

FEES AND ENTRY DEADLINES: There is a $25 entry fee until May 23, 2014, after that the fee increases to $30 until the second and final deadline of June 13, 2014. You can fill out our entry form online at www.withoutabox.com or download the form from our website at www.atlanticfilm.com and mail it in with your entry.

ENTRY FORMAT & RESENTATION FORMAT: Films with commentary or dialogue in languages other than English must be subtitled or dubbed in English for consideration. Preview copies of entries must be submitted on DVD or Blu-ray. If selected for the Festival, exhibition prints may be presented in DCP or Blu-ray (all shorts not on DCP will be compiled for exhibition from digital files). The Festival may accept other formats on a case-by-case basis and subject to availability of equipment.

PROGRAM SELECTION: All entries are viewed and chosen by a Selection Committee appointed by the Program Director. Final selections are at the sole discretion of the Festival.

NOTIFICATION: Entrants will be notified of the decisions of the Selection Committee by August 15, 2014.

CUSTOMS, SHIPPING & HANDLING: Preview copies must be clearly labeled. Do not send masters or irreplaceable formats. Preview copies will not be returned unless a self-addressed, stamped envelope or postal coupons are included with the submission. The Print Traffic and Post Production Coordinator will contact all accepted submissions with specific shipping instructions. Exhibition copies must arrive at the Festival office by August 29, 2014. The participant must pay all shipping costs to Halifax. The Festival will pay the cost of shipping exhibition copies back to the participant.

FOR INTERNATIONAL PARTICIPANTS: The Atlantic Film Festival will not handle any customs clearances. The Customs Declaration on your submission package should state, “FOR FESTIVAL PREVIEW ONLY, NO COMMERCIAL VALUE”

INSURANCE: The Festival will make every effort to ensure the safe keeping of all productions submitted for consideration that are in its care or control, however, the Applicant assumes all risk of loss or damage. The Festival retains the power to decide on all matters not specifically dealt with in these regulations. No application will be accepted unless signed. Submission of your application shall constitute acceptance of these regulations. In any dispute, the decisions of the Festival shall be final. The Applicant releases the Festival, its Officers, Directors and all other employees and representatives, from any and all claims relating in any way to your application or the submission of materials to the Festival by or on behalf of the Applicant, whether on film, video, or other media.
