Prizes & Awards

This category is a competition.

Grand Jury Award for Best Documentary Short
Outfest has the most extensive awards program of any LGBTQ film festival.
This prize is shared with other categories.

Category Rules

Feature films should be over 40 minutes long. Short films are under 40 minutes.

• Outfest only accepts online screeners to be uploaded to Withoutabox for preview screening.

• Rough cuts and works-in-progress are eligible for submission provided that the exhibition copy will be available by June 1, 2019 if selected. Please make sure you note that your submission is a rough cut and specify what is missing (e.g. temp sound, needs color correction, ADR pickups, further editing, etc.) in a title card at the beginning of your screener.

• Still photos from your work are requested with your submission and are required for all films selected for the festival. A great promotional image makes a big difference in film placement and press coverage, particularly for shorts. Even the shortest short can get publicity or festival prominence with a captivating still. Stills must be in TIFF or JPEG format and 300 DPI (dots per inch).

• You are also encouraged to enclose a synopsis, production credits, and press information regarding your film, as well as a breakdown of your film's online presence (i.e. social media following).

• If your film is selected, please note that your Blu-ray back-up copy will not be returned; it will be retained at the UCLA Film & Television Archive as part of the Outfest UCLA Legacy Project.

• By submitting your work to Outfest, you grant to Outfest a non-exclusive license to use an excerpt of your film up to two minutes in length for promotional purposes only, including but not limited to internet and television broadcast, if accepted.

• By submitting your work to Outfest, you also grant Outfest permission to screen the aforementioned work at the 2019 Outfest Los Angeles LGBTQ Film Festival if accepted, and warrants that all necessary steps have been taken to obtain the rights to use, exhibit, and display the work.
