Category Rules

This is for documentary films or videos 40 MINUTES OR LONGER. Please submit projects 39 minutes or less in the SHORT category.

Entries must be mailed with the correct entry fee for the postmarked date. You must pay by check, money order, Visa, Mastercard, or American Express. Checks or money orders must be in U.S. dollars only and made payable to HAWAII INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL. International entrants must pay by credit card or an international money order (paid in U.S. dollars through a U.S. bank). No exceptions will be made. Do not send cash.

Submissions must be postmarked by the appropriate deadline listed and include the correct entry fee. We will not consider films submitted or postmarked after July 2, 2017. Films must have been completed after January 1, 2016.

Films must not have had any commercial, theatrical, or television play in Hawaii (Hawaii premiere requirement). Feature-length films must not have had any public or festival screenings in the state of Hawaii.

We encourage filmmakers to submit works from any genre. We are especially interested in feature films, documentaries, short films, Hawaii-themed films, and films by indigenous Pacific filmmakers.

We are particularly interested in presenting U.S. and World premieres. We will consider works-in-progress, films with temporary soundtracks, digital outputs and work that did not originate from film. Films with dialogue in a language other than English must be subtitled in English for Festival presentation.
