CATEGORY RULES
Please note that this division is not a film category, but rather a competition for five-page film treatments consistent with the submission guidelines of the Writers Guild of America.
A treatment is the narrative description of a proposed feature, short film, documentary or television production. It outlines the balance between character development and plot advancement. The treatment’s purpose is to sell the proposed project to those who can bring the story to production—studios, producers, directors and independent investors. Treatments
are also the first step in protecting the ideas of the screenwriter, even before the screenplay itself is written or completed. It is both a legal and creative device to secure the prospective value of the story and to define why the screenwriter believes it has the potential for critical acclaim and commercial success.
Each submission must meet the following guidelines:
• Cover page with the working title, a one-paragraph premise and the intended audience
• Film treatment of no more than five pages, double- spaced, in narrative format
• Adapted works are eligible, but must include written permission from the copyright holder
• Entries may be submitted on paper, or in Word or PDF compatible formats only
• Submissions not meeting these requirements will not be eligible for competition.
