Sponsor:Catalina Film Festival

CATEGORY RULES
MONTHLY SPOTLIGHT GENERAL RULES
CATALINA FILM FESTIVAL / SOCIETY
Revised December, 2013

LENGTH: Films for the competition will be in two categories and these times must include all titles and credits:
Short Film: 35 minute maximum
Feature Film: 60-150 minutes

STUDENT FILMMAKERS (Any aged person attending a film school, institute, academy, or program that their project is a result of). Please indicate the ages of the film's writer, director, & producer in your submission. Student filmmakers have the right to submit their film into any of the non-student film categories. If so, you will have to pay the full price for that category and are agreeing to compete against professional filmmakers within that respective category.

FILMMAKERS UNDER 18 YEARS OLD: Please have a parent or legal guardian submit the film on your behalf.

DEADLINE: Rolling Deadline that will make your film eligible for Monthly Screenings up to and including 12 full calendar months from when your actual film is received.

SUBMISSION FORMAT: If not digitally sent through Withoutabox.com, all films should be submitted on DVD or BLU-RAY. We require TWO DVDs, or TWO BLU-RAYs depending on media you choose to send. They will not be returned. Please properly label (see below).

ONE FILM PER DISK: Please make sure there is only one film per DISK, multiple submissions require multiple entry fees and separate disks.

PRIZES: We will waive the film submission fee into our upcoming film festival if your film is selected to screen in our Monthly Spotlight. Also, we will TRY to send you out to the island for your film's screening and a Q&A session with our Film Society, if it is possible for us to do and you are already in the local Los Angeles area during that month's screening.

SUBTITLES: All non-English language films must be subtitled or dubbed in English.

ENTRY FEES: Are non-refundable.

LABELING: YOUR SUBMISSION MUST BE LABELED PROPERLY TO ENSURE CONSIDERATION.

LABELING FILMS: Put the WAB tracking number on the envelope you are using to send in the submission. Please insure your DISK is clearly labeled on BOTH the DISK cover and the DISK itself in the below format:

FILM TITLE
TOTAL RUN TIME
CONTACT NAME & PHONE NUMBER
CONTACT EMAIL ADDRESS
WAB TRACKING NUMBER

DO NOT PUT STICKER LABELS ON DISKS, as they peel off and get caught in the players. Professionally painted discs, Permanent Marker or LightScribe labeling are best to label your Disks.

Professionally mastered DISKS are preferred for ease of use in various brand-name players.

PLEASE DO NOT SEND PRESS MATERIALS, PRINTED BIOS, AND OTHER PROMOTIONAL ITEMS with your submissions. Not only will your film be viewed on its own merit by my multiple judges that won't see your materials, but it fills up the office with a lot of paper and product we end up having to throw away.

AFTER SUBMISSION ACCEPTANCE: In order for your title to be included in the Monthly Spotlight, you must agree to provide the following materials to CFF as soon as your are accepted:
1. For film, at least one screen shot of the title, and box art if available. Image must be in jpg format, 300 dpi,
2. A trailer of the film in digital format.
3. Exhibition format(s) of your project delivered no later than 5 days after acceptance (DVD and Blu-Ray can be used in all venues, Media files .mp4, .wmv, .avi can also be sent, but HD QUALITY ONLY).
4. Copies of press releases and additional press materials after acceptance ONLY, please do not send with submissions before you're accepted. It fills up the office with a lot of paper and product we end up having to throw away.
5. If you have costume characters, swag, or would be available to appear at the screening, please let us know in your WAB cover letter. We will also ask you who might be available to attend for your screening on the island once your title is accepted. There is no promise to have you at your Monthly Spotlight, but we would prefer to have you there if our partners agree to help us with travel and lodging.

CFF prefers BLU-RAY for screenings of High-Definition Films, or HD media files in the formats mentioned above. Filmmakers screen DVD's & Blu-Ray's at their own risk. If a participant chooses to exhibit their film on DVD, they must send an additional 2 copies, professionally mastered, to insure against skipping or faulty burns. We also require back-up copies for all Blu-Ray exhibition disks in the form of 1 Blu-Ray AND 1 DVD. MAKE SURE THEY ARE FULLY TESTED AND FUNCTIONAL ON AT LEAST TWO DIFFERENT KINDS OF BRAND NAME PLAYERS BEFORE YOU SEND THEM. This ensures us that we have a back-up if anything happens to the disks in transport. We've used backup copies in main exhibition screenings throughout the years because of everything and anything that can sometimes go wrong with media and/or equipment. ALSO, MAKE SURE YOUR DVD BACK-UP DOES NOT HAVE A WATERMARK ON IT - THIS COULD END UP BEING YOUR FINAL EXHIBITION FORMAT. This has happened in the past, but if it's the only DVD backup we have, we use it instead of cancelling your film's screening.

Participants agree that their film or clips from it and all other material related to their project may be used and/or published in the event program, CFF website and for any promotional purposes which CFF deems appropriate.

CFF holds no responsibility for lost or damaged prints. While the utmost care will be taken with regard to prints, it is solely up to the filmmaker to take full responsibility (i.e.insurance). The cost of delivery and pick-up of all materials is the responsibility of the filmmaker.

If selected, all commercial/private property including all trademark/copyrighted materials shown or recorded on the project is the responsibility of the filmmaker. CFF will NOT take responsibility for any infringement of copy written materials.

ONLY IF ACCEPTED AS A MONTHLY SPOTLIGHT Short or Feature Film - You are automatically in the running for our upcoming film festival submission pool.

PLEASE NOTE: We can only accept 1 Feature Film and up to 2 Short Films per month. Even if your film is a perfect candidate for our film festival, we will only have 8-11 Feature Film spots to fill (no screening the month of the festival), and 16-22 Short Film spots per year. So it is not a reflection on whether or not we liked your film if it is not chosen for the the Monthly Spotlight, it will come down to space, theme (whether or not your film fits a month's theme), or preference (if its too similar in theme/genre to a currently screened film).

ALSO PLEASE NOTE: Submitting to this Monthly Spotlight does not guarantee you a submission into our film festival unless chosen as a film for our Monthly Spotlight. If you you're not chosen for the Monthly Spotlight 3 MONTHS prior to our REGULAR Festival Deadline, please email us for a discount code that will deduct the fee you paid for the Monthly Spotlight submission from the REGULAR DEADLINE submission fee. We do this so it won't cost you anything extra to submit to both. Your film title will be checked against our records before a discount code is authorized and issued to you. We will also send out an email reminder to anyone that submitted their film to us to make sure you don't miss the festival submission deadline.
