Best Short - 2013 Invitational

Category Rules

This year's Invitational is open for general submissions as well as to festival alumnae. ALUMS MUST CONTACT THE FESTIVAL PRIOR TO SUBMISSION IN ORDER TO GET THEIR DISCOUNT at info@broadhumor.com.

To qualify, a film must must satisfy the three rules of this year's Invitational Challenge and must have a total running time of no longer that 5:00. This includes film credits.

The 2013 competition invites filmmakers to submit short films that pass the so-called Bechdel Test, a "test" that was part of comic Alison Bechdel's standup routine and which caught on because, simple and minimal as they seem, many films fail at least one of the three.

1. The film must have at least 2 female characters with names who
2. Share a scene where they talk to each other
3. About something other than men.

Films not originally shot in English must be dubbed in English or have English subtitles.

Filmmakers who opt to send a DVD submission instead of uploading and using the WAB secure online screener are responsible for assuring that the disc arrives and is playable.

Filmmakers will upload or email all requested materials within 10 days of acceptance. Screener DVDs must arrive within two weeks of acceptance to be assured of a place in the program.

By submitting, filmmakers assert that they are the owner and/or legal representative of this original work and are submitting same for review. While retaining all rights to ownership of the work, filmmakers give The Broad Humor Film Festival permission to feature, advertise, display, in whole or in part, the work titled and described above in the festival and for promotion of the festival.

Entries are valid only upon completion of the following conditions: timely receipt of a hard copy of the work or a digital submission, and receipt of the entry fee by the festival organization or Withoutabox.

The judging takes into account both the quality of the finished film, the strength of the filmmaker's vision, and puts value on taking risks in style and narrative. A broad farce that only hits in places or a nonlinear absurdist experiment might be selected over a more traditional sitcom style short that is good but unexceptional.

Prizes will be awarded according to the decision of the judges and at the discretion of the Festival. Not all prizes will necessarily be given depending upon submissions.

Materials will not be returned and the Festival is not responsible for their loss or damage.

PLEASE NOTE: As with all film submissions to Broad Humor, a woman (or women) must either be the writer or director. Men can serve EITHER as director or writer but if a male is a collaborator in both categories, the film will be disqualified.
