PRIZES & AWARDS
This category is a competition.
Thin Line Best Documentary Short Award
The overall best documentary short will be determined by a panel of judges. Only films pre-selected by the festival programming committee will be eligible for this award. The winner will be chosen based on the following characteristics: 1. Be technically and creatively well-rounded and consistent. 2. Contain innovative elements that utilize the array of directorial decisions and creativity including, but not limited to: interview techniques (if there are interviews), narrative flow (traditional or not), overall style and approach to subject matter, as well as interest and importance of the content, subject, and people or things involved in the film. 3. Judges will NOT judge based on personal beliefs about the subject matter itself or any ethical concerns privately held by any one jury member. Winner will receive a $5,000 credit toward rentals at Panavision.
Value of Goods/Services: 5,000 U.S. Dollar
The Denton Award is a $1,000 cash prize for the best feature or short documentary with a 'connection' to Denton County, Texas. A 'connection' can be any tie-in related to the People, Places, and Spirit of Denton County. Here are a few clear-cut examples: the filmmaker was born or currently resides in Denton County, the film's main character was born in or currently resides in Denton County, or the film features a Denton County location or individual city/community. Here are a few not-so-clear-cut examples: the film uses Denton County locations but they aren't featured or identifiable, the film's subject matter deals with a topic or issue currently affecting the people of Denton County, or the film's subject went to school in Denton County. All of the above examples would be eligible for this award. The criteria are meant to be broadly applied; but if you have a question send us an e-mail.
Cash Award Value: 1,000 U.S. Dollar
Best Student Short Doc Award
The Best Student Short Doc Award is based on the same criteria used in the Thin Line Best Documentary Award except it only applies to short documentaries which are labelled as a Student project in your Withoutabox submission. Student projects are eligible for all awards.
Cash Award Value: 500 U.S. Dollar
All films submitted for the Short Documentary category must be 40 minutes in length or less. Please submit two DVDs (Region 0 or Region 1 NTSC). Each DVD must have a case. We prefer paper sleeves. Please do not send retail boxes. The extra pieces are not necessary. We only watch your movie.
Please DO NOT require a direct signature from any carrier. This may dramatically delay receipt of your submission.
All entries must be labeled with the title, running time and WAB #. This information must be on the DVD itself. Please DO NOT write on the case. THIN LINE FILM FEST will make every attempt to contact you if there is damage to an entry, but cannot be held responsible if the entry is not considered due to poorly recorded or unplayable media.
If you submit as a student then you will ONLY be eligible for student awards; likewise, you must submit as a student to be eligible for the student award.
Filmmakers may submit more than one film; but each must be accompanied by its own Entry Form and Entry Fee.
THIN LINE FILM FEST will not assume responsibility or accept shipments incurring expenses for terminal charges, duties, taxes or customs brokerage. Please indicate on your shipping bill that all transportation and customs charges will be billed to the sender.
The Entry Fee is non-refundable.
DVDs and submitted materials will not be returned. Please do not send film prints, master tapes or other originals. If you require confirmation of receipt, please include a self-addressed and stamped postcard.
All entrants will be notified of their status on or near December 15, 2014 via e-mail. Please keep us informed of any changes regarding your contact information by emailing email@example.com.
