Category Rules

LENGTH: Documentary Feature film submissions must be longer than 41-minutes.

ALBERTA FILMMAKERS: For nearly 30 years, our festival has WAIVED submission fees for Alberta filmmakers. There was no financial incentive for us to do this. We did so completely as a gesture of love for our own filmmaking community. As of 2015, ALBERTA filmmakers are eligible for a DISCOUNT. Please submit to the ALBERTA Filmmaker category (all lengths).

ALUMNI: Filmmakers who have a Producer, Director, Actor or Writer credit on a film that screened at EIFF in previous years – we heart you – are considered ALUMNI and eligible for a DISCOUNT. To receive your ALUMNI discount CODE, please send an email with the TITLE of your film and the YEAR it screened at EIFF to: alumni@edmontonfilmfest.com.

ALBERTA FILMMAKER and ALUMNI? Many of you are BOTH Alberta and Alumni. Please follow instructions (above) for ALUMNI and send us an e-mail request for ALUMNI discount CODE.

SUBMISSION/PREVIEW FORMAT: Please submit one (1) DVD (NTSC or PAL) or WAB Secure Online Screener (SOS) for preview purposes. No promotional materials required with submission. An electronic press kit will be required upon acceptance only.

SUBMITTING A VIMEO LINK: Make sure the link does NOT expire prior to JULY 15th.

EXHIBITION COPIES: For festival screenings, we are NOT able to exhibit digital files, Digi-Beta or 16mm. Upon acceptance, we will need to RECEIVE your exhibition copy by... SEPTEMBER 15.

BROADCAST: Projects that HAVE BEEN broadcast on television in Alberta (including NetFlix) are NOT eligible. Films that are available for PURCHASE or DOWNLOAD in Canada prior to the festival are also NOT eligible.

YOUTUBE or ONLINE? Our preference is to bring new cinema to Edmonton audiences -- films that are NOT available to the general public on YouTube, Vimeo and other online platforms. Upon acceptance, we will request that your film be temporarily removed from public online viewing until after EIFF (October 10).

PREMIERE STATUS: Priority is given to films which have NOT screened in Edmonton PRIOR to the festival -- this includes screenings that are ticketed or FREE and Cast & Crew screenings.

COMPLETION DATE: Preference is given to films completed after JANUARY 1, 2017.

ENTRY DEADLINE: All deadlines are POSTMARKED ONLY dates -- NOT the dates they need to be at the EIFF offices. If the DEADLINE date lands on a weekend or statutory holiday, we accept submissions postmarked on the next business day.

ALL OTHER SUBMISSION RULES are in the GENERAL RULES/REGULATIONS.
