Category Rules


The 2019 Bio To B call invites projects which are either documentary or fictional biographies / biopics feature films (intended for theatrical release), European productions or co-productions which are in the final stages, either in production or rough cut. The final format of the film must be of a minimum duration of 50 minutes.

The last deadline to submit your work for selection for Bio To B is Monday 22th April 2019.

Applications are considered complete only once the video material, requested information and the corresponding inscription fee have been uploaded to the WITHOUTABOX site.

Information Requested for Applications:

- Video material. When submitting your film you are requested to upload video material with English subtitles. For the selection it is preferably to upload the all work in progress or rough cut available. However, please be aware that if selected for Bio To B, video material requested must be between 8 and 10 minutes and with English subtitles, both for work in progress or rough cut. If the film material is neither in Italian or English, films must be subtitled in English when submitting your application.
- Aspect ratio of the material which will be presented in the pitch if your project is selected (FLAT/SCOPE).
- Title of the film in Italian and English (please indicate whether it is a working title or the final title).
- Name of the director and key team members.
- Country/ies of production/co-production (specify the main co-producer).
- Name and contact details for the person responsible for the film’s application, indicating who will attend Bio To B if the project is selected.
- Main filming locations.
- Estimated length of the film.
- Estimated delivery date for the film.
- Budget.
- Funding already in place (specify whether from production or other sources of financing).
- Development and production funds already insured and potential.
- Film synopsis in English (maximum 10 lines).
- Logline in English (maximum one line).
- Filmography of the director in English.
- Filmography of the main producer in English.
- Digital photo of the director and the person responsible for the application that will be present at Bio to B in case of selection.
- Two high resolution photos of the film (.jpg or .tiff, 300 or more dpi with the dimensions of 1000 pixels or more).
- Notes from the director and / or the producer on the status of the project.
- Other pitching forums which the project took and will take part.

More than one film can be submitted by the same person, however the application fee is requested for every film submitted. Fees are to be paid at the time of submitting your film via WITHOUTABOX.

The subscription fee varies depending on the following three deadlines:

• 22th February 2019 - €50
• 22th March 2019 - €75
• 22th April 2019 - €100

It is the responsibility of the person who submits the film to guarantee the right to legally be able to do it for Bio To B. Submitting your film for the call signifies oneself to be the rights holder for the film (also in the case of any other eventual key stakeholders in the project), this includes any copyrighted material which is used in the film material presented. In cases where participants are still in the rights acquisition phase, regarding any of the aforementioned points, Biografilm Festival will examine each project on a case by case basis, deciding whether to allow the participation of the project.

Applications for the call and participation at Bio To B implies the acceptance of all of the terms and conditions. In non-specified cases, the final decision is at the total discretion of the directorial team of Biografilm Festival.

Among the films received, a maximum of 20 films will be selected, either work in progress or rough cut.

The selection of the projects to be presented during Bio To B is at the discretion of the selection committee. Selected projects will be sent an official communication to the person responsible for the application with all of the details regarding participation. Applicants must respond to this notification within 5 working days, confirming participation and indicating the names of the one/two representatives who will present the project.

All films selected are requested to insert the Bio To B and Biografilm Festival logo in the closing credits of the final film and in communication materials.

Participation at Bio To B for the selected projects requires the presence of either one or two team members per project (director and / or producer are recommended), to be involved with a series of activities between the 11th-15th of June.

The various activities include:

• Preparation stage / Fine tuning your project presentation: – personal advice on how best to present your project. How not to overrun, how to identify the key points of a project, engage in interesting dialogues with other team members and develop a relationship between the film material and the spoken presentation. This activity is mandatory and is reserved for the representatives of the selected projects, it will be held between the 11th and the 12th of June 2019.

• Presentation stage / 20 minutes to sell your film - A public presentation of the pitch which will be broken-down into film material, presentation of the project (directors notes, production structure, team members, etc.) and finally a Q&A between the pitch team, the jury and industry guests. The duration of the video material is at the discretion of the participant, but must necessarily be between 8 and 10 minutes maximum. The video material must have English subtitles. This will take place between during Bio to B – 13th-15th June 2019. All presentations will be made in English.

• One-to-one meetings - The opportunity to discuss projects in more depth one a one-to-one level between pitch teams and industry guests. These will take place between during Bio to B – 13th-15th June 2019.

• Awards Ceremony: public moment during which the three prizes will be awarded by the international jury. This event will be held on the 15th of June 2019, at the end of the day.

All pitches will be made in English – it is the responsibility of those submitting the films to ensure that they have a presenter of the pitch. Any support needed in this area will be the responsibility of those submitting the films.

The two nominated representatives of selected projects will have two accreditations Bio To B – Industry Pitch Team reserved for them. For further details, please visit the accreditation section of Biografilm website, www.biografilm.it . Accommodation will also be included.

At the end of the sixth edition of Bio To B, the international jury will award the following prizes:

• €3,000 – Best European Project
• €2,000 – Best Italian Project
• €1,000 – Best Project from Emilia-Romagna

It is possible to win in more than one category.
Information on how the awards will be paid will be provided in the official email to the winners.

All selected films will be screened in original language with English subtitles – it is the responsibility of those submitting films to ensure subtitles are included.

Film material will need to be supplied in the following formats:

1. DCP at 24 fps with subtitles in English.
2. Quicktime ProRes 422 HQ of the film or a file H264 at 24 fps on hdd, USB or Aspera Faspex digital delivery (ftp or other platforms used to send files, such as Dropbox and WeTransfer aren’t accepted if it hasn’t been agreed with the organisation), and must be subtitled in English.

Film material for selected projects, apart from in extraordinary cases approved by the Bio To B team, must be available for the duration of the whole event and must arrive in Bologna by the 20th of May 2019. Last minute revisions will not be accepted on film material, any material submitted after this deadline is at the discretion of the Bio to B team. In case of acceptance Bio to B will not be held accountable for problems that may occur during the screening of such new content.
