Category Rules

This festival is open to non-fiction films and videos from any production date from anywhere in the world.

2016 SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

DATE OF COMPLETION: Films of any completion date are eligible for submission.

LENGTH: MiniDocs (15 minutes and under), Shorts (15 - 40 minutes) and Features (over 40 minutes), Big Sky Award (any length)

LANGUAGE: DVD preview screeners and exhibition masters must either be in English or have English subtitles.

RIGHTS & CLEARANCES: Big Sky expects all filmmakers to secure music and talent rights to their films for festival exhibition. It is the sole responsibility of the entity submitting the project to secure permission from the copyright holder of the material in question. Big Sky will not be held responsible for any inclusion of uncleared copyrighted materials. In order to submit, you must agree to the Terms of Entry listed at the end of the online application.

PREMIERE REQUIREMENT: Big Sky does not have specific premiere requirements. However, the festival does take previous screenings and broadcasts into consideration when making selections, particularly when a film has already screened in Montana.

ROUGH CUTS: Rough cuts are accepted for entry. If you submit a rough cut, we cannot guarantee that the programmers will be able to review an updated cut. If you are submitting a rough cut, make sure it is indicated as such on your submission copy. Include information such as intended final running time and work remaining to be completed.

WORKS-IN-PROGRESS: Big Sky does not exhibit works-in-progress at the festival. Films must be completed by mid-January 2016 in order to be screened.

EXHIBITION FORMATS: Big Sky screens the following exhibition formats at the festival - High Definition - 35mm, Blu-Ray, and Quicktime files. Standard Definition - DVD (for films that originated in standard definition only). Films that originated in high definition must submit one of the accepted HD formats for screening.

FESTIVAL NOTIFICATION: Notification will be sent by email to the Primary Contact listed on the entry form by approximately January 1st, 2016. You are responsible for updating Big Sky directly regarding any change to the Primary Contact information and ensuring that emails from programming@bigskyfilmfest.org are not blocked by spam filters.

All entry deadlines are postmark deadlines. Entries postmarked after each deadline may not be considered. Submission fees are non-refundable.

SUBMISSION FORMAT: Big Sky requires ONE (1) DVD preview screener in the NTSC (Region 1 or 0) or PAL format. Include the film title, running time, tracking number, and format (NTSC or PAL) on each disc. If available, paper sleeves are preferred. Sending a physical DVD is strongly encouraged even if your submission includes an online screener.

PAYMENT: Submission fees can be paid by credit card via Withoutabox.

RETURNS: Preview materials will NOT be returned.
