Prizes & Awards

This category is a competition.

HIFF Grand Jury - Best Short Film
The Festival will give out two awards for Best Narrative Short and Best Documentary Short. With the rich plethora of perspectives provided by short films, HIFF’s mission is to champion emerging voices from around the world in the most dominant and voluminous format in the film festival circuit. Short films are sometimes under appreciated and the goal of these awards are to shine a light at this very malleable format and a small glimpse of perspectives from across the globe.

Audience Choice Award
The Festival’s most coveted awards for Favorite Narrative Feature, Documentary Feature and Short Film brings the power to the people and are determined purely by audience voting. Previous winners ranged from awards buzz worthy films like LION and THE EAGLE HUNTRESS to locally made films like HO’OMAU and cult films like WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS.

Category Rules

This category is for short subject films or videos, i.e., all narrative film, animations and experimental projects 39 MINUTES OR LESS.

Entries must be mailed with the correct entry fee for the postmarked date. You must pay by check, money order, Visa, Mastercard, or American Express. Checks or money orders must be in U.S. dollars only and made payable to HAWAII INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL. International entrants must pay by credit card or an international money order (paid in U.S. dollars through a U.S. bank). No exceptions will be made. Do not send cash.

Submissions must be postmarked by the appropriate deadline listed and include the correct entry fee. We will not consider films submitted or postmarked after July 17, 2017. Films must have been completed after January 1, 2016.

Films must not have had any commercial, theatrical, or television play in Hawaii (Hawaii premiere requirement).

We encourage filmmakers to submit works from any genre. We are especially interested in feature films, documentaries, short films, Hawaii-themed films, and films by indigenous Pacific Islanders.

We are particularly interested in presenting U.S. and World premieres. We will consider works-in- progress, films with temporary soundtracks, digital outputs and work that did not originate from film. Films with dialogue in a language other than English must be subtitled in English for Festival presentation.
