Category Rules

Documentaries: Nonfictional motion pictures intended to document some aspect of reality, primarily for the purposes of instruction, education, or maintaining a historical record. To qualify to screen at the ABFF, there will be a person of African descent as the writer, director or producer, or the content will have a multicultural actor in the lead role.

Criteria and Eligibility:

• Writer, director or producer must be a person of African descent, or the content must have a multicultural actor in the lead role
• Short docs=20 minutes maximum run time or
• Feature length= 72 minutes minimum run time
• Filmmaker must be 18 years of age or older
• Competition is open to U.S. and international entries.
• Films must be in the English language or contain English subtitles.
• Films must not have had any television or internet broadcast.
• Films must have commenced principal photography on or after January 1, 2017.

For submission purposes, preview films may have temporary soundtracks or digital outputs

All submissions must be received by no later than the late deadline of February 15, 2018

Award Eligibility:
Grand Jury Award--Best Documentary (Prize TBD)
