MISSION & OBJECTIVE

Albany FilmFest is an international juried festival of original, creative, and independent short (and really short) films. Our mission is to stimulate communication, creativity, community, and collaboration, and to bridge business, community, and the arts by encouraging youth and adults to express themselves through film.

AFF welcomes new and experienced filmmakers of all ages. We watch every film that is submitted, and finalists are judged by a panel of respected film industry professionals. Proceeds help support youth media education in Albany.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

The Albany FilmFest is an international juried festival of original, creative, and independent short films (and really short films) that takes place each year in Albany, California. Our quirky little 1-square-mile city is in the heart of the San Francisco Bay Area — right next door to Berkeley and directly across from the Golden Gate Bridge. We’ve been working to connect community and the arts and to encourage creative expression and conversation inside and outside Albany since 2011.

Here are 5 important things we'd like you to know about us:

1. Albany FIlmFest takes place annually in Albany, California (not in Albany, New York, or in any of the 33 other cities named Albany in the United States). We're a 1.7 square mile city with small-town ambiance in the heart of the San Francisco Bay Area: right next door to Berkeley and directly across the Bay from San Francisco. Our main screening is at Landmark’s Albany Twin theater, a cool, deco-era two-screen theater on Solano Avenue in downtown Albany, with other events in various venues around town.

2. Albany FIlmFest is a juried short film festival. One of a relatively short list of shorts festivals in the US, Albany FilmFest is a great forum for both aspiring and experienced filmmakers. All films are under 30 minutes. Categories include narrative, documentary, animation, tiny movies (3 minutes or less), two youth categories, and one special Albany category.

3. Albany FIlmFest is a real filmmaker’s festival. We look for films made with originality, creativity, and a unique point of view, and we accept submissions from local, national, and international filmmakers. Our selection team watches every film that is submitted before agreeing on the finalists. Our judging panel, comprised of working filmmakers and film industry professionals, then selects the winners in each category.

4. Albany FIlmFest is a true community celebration. We are supported by the City of Albany, local businesses, and community members, and run by a dedicated team of volunteers and city staff. Screenings in our downtown business district are attended by film-goers of all ages from across the Bay Area and the United Stated. Families, kids, teens, and discerning adult film-goers are all welcome. We try as much as possible to keep our prices low so that everyone can attend. You’ll be able to watch films all day, and meet guest directors, judges, and emerging filmmakers from the Bay Area and across the United States in a casual, creative, and friendly atmosphere.

5. Our proceeds go to support youth media education in Albany. An important part of Albany FilmFest’s mission is to encourage youth to explore and develop communication, storytelling, and creativity through film, video, and media. In addition to our two youth filmmaker categories, and a special portion of AFF programmed expressly for kids, we support a variety of camps, classes, events, and workshops to do just that.

AFF is a volunteer project of the City of Albany’s Community Media Access Committee in conjunction with the City of Albany and cable channel KALB.
