Horror Feature films
The Horror Feature Category may include subject matter ranging ghost stories to violent subject matter. Remember though, gore for gores sake will not get you in. We are looking for stories that creep and scare. We are looking at mood, character and the total effectiveness of the horror story you out to tell. So if there are buckets of blood in you film, just be sure it's put to good story use.
Horror Shorts
Horror shorts are a great way for filmmakers to show off their chops at setting an audience on edge without the responsibility of a three act narrative. Our Horror shorts are always a huge hit with audiences.
Horror shorts should have a run time between 2min and 50min. Subject matter can range from the supernatural to slasher, monsters, and suedo docs. Anything that creeps out your viewer. Legitimate Documentaries should be about a horror subject and follow the TRT for shorts.
Fantasy Feature films
Fantasy films can run the gamut. Access to advanced effects software have opened up whole worlds of sci-fi and fantastic film subject matter to the independent artist. Just look at 2010’s Gareth Edwards' 'Monsters' to see what can be done by a single filmmaker with a vision.
Hobgoblins, time/space travel, dreams, anything that touches the worlds of fantasy are up for grabs!

Screenplay competition
The Screenplay Competition is an opportunity for writers to submit works that have not yet been produced. If selected, as one of the five most promising scripts in Horror or Fantasy, the writer receives passes to festival events and is recognized during the festival awards. Not to mention, it is great chance for writers to hang out with new directors and producers of the genre.
The founders of this fest where invited to speak on a panel for Screen writers at PitchFest! They shared the stage with such Talent as Pen Densham, Tom Lazarus and agent Adam Levenberg. Our five top scripts were introduced to agents and producers looking for new material in the genre.
All Screenplays submitted are read ONLY by screenplay writers and producers rather than students or teachers.

MISSION & OBJECTIVE

The Los Angeles Fear and Fantasy Film Festival prides it self on selecting Exceptional Quality films in the genre and maintaining an intimate, boutique festival environment.
This Festival was founded and run by filmmakers in the Industry. The Mission is to support and discover Fear and Fantasy films from up and coming artist, as well as honor the classics of the genre.

The Festival supports fear and fantasy films in all their incarnations, which can include documentaries on social fear, films of fantasy (The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Lord of the Rings), science fiction fare (THX 1138), Horror (The Blair Witch Project) to harder genre fare (Saw, Hostile)

Also the festival celebrates filmmakers, actors, and artists who have contributed to the genre throughout the years. Each year an Achievement Award is given for special contributions to the genre (in all it's forms).

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

The Los Angeles Fear and Fantasy film festival is an opportunity to showcase new filmmakers in the horror and Fantasy genre. It is also a meeting place for those who are lovers of Fear and Fantasy films! The Fear and Fantasy film festival screens feature length and short subject films.
We also have and Screenplay competition for un-produced feature works. The five most promising Screenplays will be honored at the festival.
Working in the industry, we have been able to honor luminaries in the genre like Director Russell Mulcahy (Highlander, Resident Evil) and Veronica Cartwright (Alien, The Witches of Eastwick) and Harry Dean Stanton (Twin Peaks, Alien, Repo Man). The boutique setting allows new filmmakers to meet veterans rather than just seeing them on a stage.
As we launch our Fourth year in Los Angeles we are continually getting word back that films, hand picked for our fest in previous years, have rolled out into full distribution! Naturally, we are very proud of those filmmakers we choose each year, and watching them go on to wider visibly and greater success is exactly what our showcase fest fights to garner.

GENERAL RULES

Hey, don't think for a second we don't know what kind of skill and craftsmanship it takes to convince an audience that a character is REALLY being chased by a vengeful entity. OR that your garage is REALLY a post apocalyptic lab! That's why The Los Angeles Fear and Fantasy Film Festival not only honors the Best Horror Feature, Horror Short, Fantasy Feature, Fantasy short, we also have awards for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director and other categories! So put your best foot forward. We ARE filmmakers and we KNOW what it is to work those extra all-nighters to get just the right cut or just the right turn of phrase.
So the rules are simple. Send us the work that YOU are most proud of. This festival is fun and laid back, so we hope to see you there.
