Film submissions in this category must adhere to the following to be considered:

Narrative fiction films (of any genre) with a total running time of 30 minutes or less directed by a man (or male-identified person) that pass the Bechdel Test and feature a complex female protagonist. Note that co-directors may be of any gender in this category.

MISSION & OBJECTIVE
The Bluestocking Film Series presents high-quality, provocative short fiction films featuring strong female protagonists. We're very proud to bring this innovative screening series to the beautiful, culturally vibrant, film-loving city of Portland, Maine.

Our mission is to encourage and promote production by filmmakers of narratives that reflect the diverse experiences of women and the complexity of women's lives and relationships with each other. Therefore, preference will be given to films that feature strong, complex female protagonists in leading roles.

Our main criteria - and what makes the Bluestocking Film Series unique - is that all submissions must first "pass" The Bechdel Test to be considered.

Therefore, ALL films in ANY category must have at least 2 named female characters who talk to each other (for more than a few seconds) about something other than a man (or men or boys). To find out more about the test, please Google it.

Because the Bechdel Test is intended to apply to narrative films, we invite submissions of fiction films ONLY.

IMPORTANT: ALL submissions must pass the ‘Bechdel Test for Women in Movies’ which is as follows:

-Are there 2 or more women in it who have names?
-Do they talk to each other?
-Do they talk to each other about something other than men (boys)?

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
Since 2011, the Bluestocking Film Series has been showcasing talented directors of short narrative films that pass the Bechdel Test. We favor films that feature strong, complex women characters in leading roles.

Our mission is to encourage production (by filmmakers of all genders) of films that portray female characters as strong, capable, flawed, and complex as their male counterparts.

The Bluestocking Film Series was conceived by filmmaker Kate Kaminski and is produced with partner Betsy Carson (Gitgo Productions).

GENERAL RULES
Besides being a showcase for talented directors (whether established or emerging), the Bluestocking Film Series seeks high-quality, provocative, and innovative films that feature complex female protagonists and pass the Bechdel Test.

We're specifically looking for cinematic stories that portray women characters who are as strong, complicated, flawed, and heroic as their male counterparts.

BLUESTOCKING FILM SERIES RULES:

We have two categories for submission of short films – one for women directors and one for men directors.

ALL submissions must first pass The Bechdel Test. Therefore, all submissions are required to feature 2 (or more) named women characters who talk to each other (for more than a few seconds) about something other than a man (or men or boys). To learn more about the Bechdel Test, please Google it.

Both categories carry a cash prize awarded by audience selection via secret ballot.
