SPECIAL SUBMISSIONS ONLY • Final deadlines have passed. If you have a deadline waiver or special instructions from the event, select a Category of Entry to continue.

Narrative
Storytime. This category emphasizes the telling of an original storyline and a character’s
development whether it be the hero’s journey, comedy or tragedy.
Weird / Eccentric
You’ll know it when you see it. This category of experimentation pushes the boundaries of what you believed “weird” was and then steps over that line a few more times with aplomb. It should leave you with a coy grin, scratching your head wondering, “Well, that was weird!”
Animation/ Mixed-Media
BEST ANIMATION/Mixed Media
This category considers animated music videos including those utilizing stop-motion, 2-D, 3-D, and computer animated graphics. As well as the merit of the song and video concept, consider technical execution and originality of animation / mixed media sequences.
Cinematography
CINEMATOGRAPHY
Great cinematography reveals the highest artistic or scientific attention to composition, lighting, cameras angles and movement of the camera. Exceptional music videos use cinematography to blend the song and visuals into a seamless dance.
Interactive
INTERACTIVE
The ability to step into someone else’s shoes or look through someone else’s eyes is the true power of interactive content. Interactive music videos break the convention of creator and viewer - be it placing you on-stage for a performance or forcing you into a character’s virtual point of view. An exceptional interactive video should open your eyes to new possibilities and push you past the boundaries of passive consumption and into the embrace of the immersive.
Student
STUDENT / OVERACHIEVER
The student overachiever could barely be recognized as a student work at all.
Their ever-learning spirit might employ DIY techniques or unconventional approaches to storytelling but you can certainly see a bright mind at work.

Feel free to judge student works against its peers but also look for the work that stands on it’s own in the brave new world.

*Must be a student in 2017 or 2018 and provide a student ID within your video project submission.
Commercial/ Promotional (NEW)
YOUR AD HERE (Best Music-Driven Commercial / Promotional Video)

After seeing so many directors and production houses crossing wires between commercial work and music videos, we thought it was time to award those that venture to make commercials cool again! Including festival lineup announcements, event recaps and good ol' fashioned TV ads, these outstanding videos are music-driven and may be structured moreso like a music video.

Yet, in the end, they still seek to sell you something. You just may not mind or even really notice.
Funny or High
FUNNY or HIGH

Laugh, cry, or urinate yourself. You know funny when you find it and these knee-slappers are the best of the bunch. As with all music videos, you’ve got to match the tone of the song, and some of these punchlines are slow and steady but payoff in the final delivery.

Note, some of these may work best under the influence, so watch accordingly.
Horror
Our Horror screening has gotten so good it needed its own award! These mini-music-horror films manage to pack the suspense and gore of a full flick into under 5 minutes. Whether brooding music, fake bloodbaths, or stunning viscera, it’s all about the execution! (pun intended).

Now, note this does not need to be the MOAT horrific, but it should scream in one final gasping breath, “THE BEST!”.

(NOTE: AMVF does not condone violence).
Performance (by an actor, ensemble, or band. #jazzhands)
PERFORMANCE (Actor, Ensemble, or Band)

Great videos often demand great performances. Be it from a lead actor, singer, or ensemble, their delivery can make or break a strong video concept.

In this case, whether subtle or striking, the performance is integral to the success of the music video, and for better or worse will live forever embodied in music video canon.
Visual Effects
VISUAL EFFECTS
Visual effects differ from pure animation or mixed media in that they seek to tell a story with some level of realism, as opposed to fantastical or unbelievable visuals. Think big budget, stunts, cutting-edge equipment, or video that involves live action and CGI to create environments that look realistic but would be challenging or near impossible to capture on camera.
