All films must be - at least partially - filmed in Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Burundi, South Sudan, or Kenya. Special exceptions may be made at the festival's discretion for films written and directed by citizens of Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Burundi, South Sudan, or Kenya who have filmed in a foreign country. We are happy to accept films of any genre, style or length. We're simply looking to showcase East African film talent!
Pan-African Cinema
All films must be - at least partially - filmed in Africa. Special exceptions may be made at the staff's discretion for films written and directed by citizens of Africa who have filmed in a foreign country. We are happy to accept films of any genre, style or length. We're simply looking to showcase African film talent!
African Diaspora Cinema
Films made by anyone who identifies as being part of the African Diaspora.

We'll leave it to you to identify your African connection, but it could be anything from something personal from the filmmaking team, like an ancestral connection to Africa, to something about the film, such as a story connection to Africa or African communities living outside of Africa.
Non-African Cinema
Films from outside of Africa! We'd love to showcase fresh talent, so are particularly excited to consider first films.

MISSION & OBJECTIVE

The African Film Festival will focus on films made by Ugandans and other East Africans, while also showing other pan-African and African Diaspora movies. Additionally, we are showcasing, for the first time ever, films shot in Kabale, Uganda – an exciting birth of local stories being told through the medium of film.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

Warm greetings from Kabale district, the home of the African Film Festival! It is here, nestled in the towering hills and early morning mist, that Winston Churchill beheld the beauty of the land and christened it ‘The Switzerland of Africa ‘.

The African Film Festival focuses on films made by Africans and those in the African Diaspora. Additionally, we will be showcasing films shot in Kabale, Uganda – an exciting birth of local stories being told through the medium of film.

Last year, our festival was opened by the RT. Honourable Prime Minister of Uganda, Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, and the Governor of Kisumu Kenya, his Excellence Professor Peter Nyong'o. We also welcomed the Ugandan High Commissioner to Canada, Kisumu's Minister of Arts, Culture and Tourism, and filmmakers from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, the UK, Canada, and the US.

The African Film Festival is a celebration of what is possible when the best of two worlds meet. The festival is a result of the collective vision of United in Film, a Canadian-based film not-for-profit, and Reel Impact Foundation, a Ugandan film charity based in Kabale, two organizations that are working together to support filmmaking in Kabale through the provision of a free, two year training program, modern filmmaking equipment, scholarships to attend international film festivals and conferences, and monetary grants available for use towards the creation of their movies.

This is your chance to join us in making history, as we create a sustainable, indigenous film industry in Uganda!
