Short Films
This is the section of the festival where Shorts will be accepted. We will accept short films that are 40 minutes or under including Documentaries, Narrative, Animated and MUSIC VIDEOS.
US Narrative Feature
Feature Length Fiction Film minimum 41 minutes. We select a wide variety of genres and film types for this feature narrative category.

College Student Feature Films (Narrative or Docs)
This is the section of the festival that will accept films made by emerging filmmakers at the college level. Films of all types will be accepted in this category - features, documentaries, comedies, horrors. Shorts should be submitted in its specific category listed. The film may have been completed after graduation, but MUST HAVE BEEN STARTED as a student.
International Features (Narrative or Docs)
International films are visions from around the globe, designed to bring to light select regions, territories, or cultures through film. Films are selected based on creative storytelling, unique visions and/or global impact. To qualify, films must be Tampa Premieres and either produced outside of the United States or focus on stories that are specific to cultures and traditions outside of the United States.

Please note that we can not accept PAL.
Made in Florida Narrative Feature Films (Narrative or Docs)
GIFF celebrates the best of Florida filmmakers via a program designed to simultaneously give residents a medium that extols their area roots while giving them a place amongst the world's finest films. We are looking for the next emerging Florida Filmmakers from the growing film industry in the Sunshine State.

A minimum of 25% of the film budget and/or production time must be in Florida.

US Documentary Feature Films
Our Documentary Feature Competition is open to films 41 minutes or more. It is a mixture of adventurous and thought-provoking films that challenge and inspire audiences. Films are selected based on high artistic merits and the discovery of a unique and personal vision.
Tampa Bay High School Film Competition
This is the section of the festival that will accept films made by emerging High School filmmakers who is currently in school within the Tampa Bay Area. Films from students outside the area will not be accepted in this category. Please submit in the High School Film Showcase. Films of all types will be accepted in this category - features, documentaries, comedies, horrors, shorts etc.
College Student Short Films
Short films must be 40 minutes or under. Project must have been started as a college student. Please let us know your college/university.
Horror Films (Narrative, Shorts, or Docs)
This category is designed to highlight Horror Films submitted to the festival. A prize may or may not be awarded in the Horror category, but your submission will still qualify the Narrative, Shorts, or Documentary categories.
Music Films (Narrative, Shorts, or Docs)
This category is designed to highlight Music Films submitted to the Festival. You will still qualify for the Narrative, Shorts, or Docs Awards if you submit to this category. Further, GIFF is collaborating with the Gasparilla Music Festival to highlight music films and its subject. If the subject of your film is able to perform live during the Film Festival OR at the Gasparilla Music Festival, please let us know!
Children & Family Films (Narrative, Shorts, or Docs)
This category is to highlight any Children & Family related films, whether its a Narrative, Shorts, or Docs. GIFF will showcase these films in a separate category during the festival, possibly in our own Children Film Festival. You will still qualify for awards in the category your submit, whether Narrative, Docs, or Shorts.
Made in Florida Short Films
This category is any shorts Made in Florida. The MAJORITY of your film must be made in Florida to qualify.
International Short Films
Short Films originated from any country outside the United States.
General High School Film Showcase (Not Tampa Bay Made)
This category is for high school films not made within the Tampa Bay Area. Your film must have been started while in school.


The Suncoast Credit Union Gasparilla International Film Festival is a celebration of independent film held annually in Tampa, Florida and has become the most exciting and most well attended festival in the Bay area. (Tampa/St. Petersburg). GIFF proud to be a part of the Gasparilla Arts Month with 2 other arts event. The Gasparilla Festival of the Arts occur during GIFF and feature hundred of artists from around the country. The Gasparilla Music Festival feature a variety of headlining bands from around the world. Attend the Film Festival and stay for a Music and and an Arts Festival.


The Suncoast Credit Union Gasparilla International Film Festival(GIFF), Tampa/St. Petersburg's largest independent film festival. The festival is part of Gasparilla Arts Month (Music, Art, Film) in Tampa where over 100,000 arts patrons are expected for all the events over the month of March- so you will most definitely have the opportunity to expose your film to this large audience and attending film distributors!

Most importantly, YOU the FILMMAKER is our #1 priority. Movie Maker Magazine listed GIFF as a "Top 25 Film Festival Worth the Entry Fee" for 2013, 2014, and 2015. Competition films receive AIR STIPENDS and HOTEL accommodations. Additionally, while in Tampa, our guest services offers in house transportation services. If you are accepted into our festival, you will be treated to a number of FILMMAKER ONLY exclusives, including private receptions, our Filmmaker Lounge, VIP treatment and more. Further, attending filmmakers will receive deeply discounted tickets to our sister event, the Gasparilla Music Festival.

2016 Festival Recap:
In 2016, GIFF celebrated our 10th year anniversary, welcoming special guests in the likes of Rita Moreno, Rosie Perez, Mark-Paul Gosselaar, among others. World Premiere films included Precious Cargo, starring Mark-Paul and Bruce Willis. We were also proud to welcome back Randall Emmett and George Furla of Emmett Furla Films, the producers behind Lone Survivor, End of Watch, and many more blockbuster films. Mr. Emmett has since joined GIFF's Advisory Board.

2015 Festival Recap:
The most notable achievement of the 2015 Festival is the acquisition of two films which made its World Premiere at the 2015 GIFF. "The Poet of Havana" was acquired at the Festival by HBO. "The Challenger" starring Michael Clark Duncan was acquired by Freestyle Releasing who was also in attendance at the Festival.

In addition, you will experience all the history and culture of Tampa!

Tampa Bay is rich in tradition: Tampa was once home to many Cuban cigar makers ("The Cigar Capital of the World"). Our Festival will be holding some events in Ybor City- Tampa's National and Historic Landmark District and Latin Quarter- the original home of cigar making industry, as well as Opening Night at the Historic Tampa Theatre.

The Festival will be showcasing films of all types/genres, including features, documentaries, shorts, music videos, family-friendly films and those with a International flavor!

* Once accepted, DCP, DVDs or Blu-Rays' must be labeled clearly with the title, running time and contact information (including name, address and phone number).

* More than one entry may be submitted. Each entry must be accompanied by an official entry form and entry fee.

* The entry fee is non-refundable.

If selected, filmmakers authorize Gasparilla International Film Festival (GIFF) to conduct up to four (4) theatrical screenings during the 2017 Gasparilla Film Festival. Also, your film may be part of the GIFF Indie Series throughout 2017. Once your film has been selected, it cannot be pulled by the filmmaker.


GIFF's publicity and marketing teams will craft a specific promotional campaign for each film. To assist in this campaign, participating filmmakers will be responsible for providing the following materials by the January deadlines, if selected to participate:

Filmmakers authorize GIFF to run trailers and promos of selected films as called for on local television stations.

Filmmakers that provide a marketing plan for attracting attendees will be given special consideration.


The Gasparilla International Film Festival is hereby granted the right to utilize an excerpt from any film submitted and accepted for exhibition at the Festival for promotional purposes.

The individual or corporation submitting the film hereby warrants that it is authorized to commit the film for screening, and understands and accepts these requirements and regulations.

The undersigned shall indemnify and hold harmless The Gasparilla International Film Festival from and against any and all claims, liabilities, losses, damages, and expenses (including but not limited to attorney's fees, and costs of the court) which may be incurred by reason of any claim involving copyright, trademark, credits, publicity, screening, and loss of or damage to the screening videos entered.
