Short Subject
Short films of all genres are accepted and should be under 50 minutes in length. Music videos and animated short films are also accepted.
Screenplay Competition
We accept screenplays of all lengths and genres.


Charleston International Film Festival (CIFF) was created to bring people together through the art and science of film. Through this unique art, which has the power to touch our emotions and provoke thought like no other, we intend to promote the exchange of ideas, a greater cross-cultural awareness and to inspire filmmakers from around the world.


CIFF is an international film competition, dedicated to showcasing the art and talent of emerging filmmakers from the U.S. and around the globe in a city known for its deep-rooted American history. There will also be a screenplay competition.

The 8th Annual CIFF will bring attendees together for 5 days to attend premieres, special events, seminars, after parties and deal making opportunities. The festival will showcase shorts, features, documentaries and animations of all genre and subject matter.

On the 5th and final night of the festival, CIFF will present awards to honor the finest in filmmaking and screenwriting displayed during the competition at the Awards Gala. These awards include a $1,000 cash prize for Best Film and a $500 cash prize for Best Screenplay.

CIFF is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose sponsors include: Charliewood Pictures, Xfinity, Finlandia, College of Charleston, Mount Gay Rum, Palmetto Brewery, Charleston Magazine, Carolina One, Dixon Hughes Goodman, Technical Event Company, Renaissart, Trident Technical College, First Citizens Bank, Charleston City Paper, The Art Institute of Charleston, inventivENVIRONMENTS, Legare+Bailey+Hinske, Cru Catering, BOLD Communications Group, Snyder Event Rentals among others.

All films submitted to the Charleston International Film Festival are selected by our festival selection committee, which evaluates each film, looking for excellence in quality and originality in new independent cinema. The festival will showcase 80+ of the most auspicious non-studio films, which include features, shorts (including animations and music videos) and documentaries. All winners will be announced at the Closing Awards Ceremony to be held on Sunday, including the winner of the Screenplay Competition. The winner for Best Film will receive a $1,000 cash prize and the winner of the Best Screenplay will receive a $500 cash prize. Please see specific category for all guidelines and requirements. Remember to include your WAB number on all submissions.


Filmmaker agrees to the following upon submission:

-The film cannot play in any festival screenings in the Charleston area 90 days prior to the Charleston International Film Festival.

-One DVD (NTSC) of the film; your DVD must be labeled with the title, director's name, length, subtitling (if any), please indicate if the submission is a rough cut, or work in progress and include the WAB number on all materials.

Upon acceptance, the filmmaker will be requested to provide the following:

-Press Kit (items included are at your discretion)

-Short Synopsis - preferably 2-3 short sentences.

-Poster mounted to be displayed during your screening. You will need to bring an easel.

***For promotion of selected films the festival may request the owners of the participating films to make available a sufficient number of press kits, stills, extra DVDs for the video library as well as any press requests.

-Final Screening format will be H264.MOV.

The Festival is not responsible for the damage to DVDs incurred in shipping. All preview DVDs and submitted press materials will not be returned. Absolutely no exceptions will be permitted.
