NewFilmmakers Los Angeles (NFMLA) is a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization designed to showcase innovative works by emerging filmmakers from around the world, providing the Los Angeles community of entertainment professionals and film goers with a constant surge of monthly screening events. NFMLA provides a forum where filmmakers can be recognized for their contributions, have open audience discussions about their projects and connect with industry professionals for insight on distribution, production, acquisition and representation.

NewFilmmakers Los Angeles (NFMLA) was founded in 2007. NFMLA’s monthly festivals were first housed at the A+D Art and Architecture Museum on L.A.’s Miracle Mile. The festival soon outgrew this location, moving next to Sunset Gower Studios in Hollywood where its head offices are still located and then to the 500 seat South Park Center theater in Downtown Los Angeles where NFMLA’s monthly festivals are held today.

With the goal of showcasing, supporting and connecting emerging filmmakers, NFMLA rapidly expanded to become much more than a monthly film festival. NFMLA regularly partners with organizations, companies, and film schools like SAG-AFTRA, the Producer’s Guild, Film Independent, Women in Film, Disney, TheWrap, Sony Pictures, DreamWorks, Fox Studios, MovieMaker Magazine, Variety, Film L.A., the City of Los Angeles, foreign consulates, and more to host an array of annual programs, workshops, panels, competitions, and learning and networking opportunities.

Our core program, the monthly film festival presents red carpet screenings of documentary, short and feature films that have been submitted from all over the world, followed by a Q&A with each films director. The program also offers a special after party so the audience can meet the filmmakers and incredible talent involved, and so that filmmakers can network and connect with each other.

Each year, NFMLA presents awards for the best films shown in the previous year’s film monthly festivals at an exclusive gala event.

All filmmakers featured in NFMLA film festivals are invited to participate in on camera interviews for MovieMaker Magazine.

NewFilmmakers Los Angeles screens monthly year round. FESTIVAL DATES displayed on this FilmFreeway listing are for expiration of this listing and ARE NOT our screening dates.

Notification: Review times will vary, and final decision notices are typically sent within four months of submission. We send decline notifications on a rolling basis, and will contact you directly by phone or email if your film is shortlisted to go into the next round of consideration (please note: a phone call is just a next step in shortlisting and does not mean your film has been accepted. Films have only been accepted once they have been sent an Official Acceptance Notice.)

If it has been over six months since your film has been submitted and you have not received a notification, please feel free to check in with us for an update on its status. We unfortunately do not have the staff bandwidth to reply to status updates for more recently submitted films.

Status Updates: IF IT HAS BEEN MORE THAN SIX MONTHS SINCE YOUR FILM'S SUBMISSION: please email info@nfmla.org with the subject line: "Status Update Request - [TITLE OF YOUR FILM] - Submitted [DATE YOU SUBMITTED] on [NAME OF PLATFORM YOU SUBMITTED THROUGH (ex. FilmFreeway/Withoutabox/Direct Form)]"

As is the industry standard among many festivals, in all instances except Music Videos and  ‘New Media’ programs, we generally do not screen films that have theatrical distribution nor films that have been posted online without password protection, or are available for streaming on a VOD platform (with the exception of SVOD for short films). However, we reserve the right to make exceptions to this rule on a case by case basis, so please feel free to apply regardless.
