|Short Silent Films
|Films up to 20 minutes long in any genre. Films must be silent or without dialogue and able to be screened silently. Our composers will score the film and the music will be performed live.
If the film already has a notated score that fits our instrumentation, or if the score can be arranged to fit our instrumentation, then it is eligible for consideration.
|Films with no dialogue
|Films up to 20 minutes long in any genre. Films must be silent or without dialogue and able to be screened silently. Our composers will write a new score for the film.
If there is an existing notated score we will consider performing that if it fits our instrumentation or can be arranged to fit our instrumentation.
MISSION & OBJECTIVE
It is the mission of the Sound of Silent Film Festival to present modern silent films, or films without dialogue that can be screened in silence, with original music performed live, to encourage filmmakers to work in the silent tradition and to introduce this exciting medium to new audiences.
ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
The Sound of Silent Film Festival takes place in Chicago's historic Davis Theater and is now in its thirteenth year. We screen each film in silence with original music by our composer members performed live.
The deadline for submission for the 2018 festival is November 30.
The films we screen are either actual modern silent films with no sound whatsoever or films without dialogue with sound effects that can easily be recreated acoustically in the musical score.
We will consider films too that have an existing musical score if we can perform it with the film for the instruments we have available.
In addition to films by up and comers we have also programmed and performed live music to well-known filmmakers such as Guy Maddin, Martin Scorsese, Alexander Payne, the Brothers Quay and others.
We're interested in short films, between 2 and 20 minutes long, in all styles and genres.
The event routinely gets a lot of press and attracts younger audiences between 18 and 40.
We're very excited to be presenting the festival at the Davis Theater for the first time ever.
