Domestic Short
Any short film produced outside of the state of Michigan will be put into the Best Domestic/International Short competition.
Any film longer than 40 minutes will qualify for the Features category.
Michigan Shorts
All short films must have been produced in the state of Michigan and must not exceed 44 minutes in running time.
A range of filmmaking style that is generally quite different from, and often opposed to, the practices of mainstream commercial and documentary filmmaking.
Documentary films constitute a broad category of non-fiction motion pictures intended to document some aspect of reality, primarily for the purposes of instruction or maintaining a historical record.
Michigan Feature
Any Michigan Feature or Documentary exceeding 44 minutes may qualify for this category.
Web Series
Submissions that enter the web series category must consist of a short which initially aired on the internet as opposed to television. The webisode intended to be screened may be a preview, a promotion, a commercial, or part of a collection of shorts. These may be part of an established series or may be independent material.
The student category is for high school and university level filmmakers. Submissions will be rated on the quality of writing, production technique, and the overall finished product.


The Uptown Film Festival (UFF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching local culture and raising consciousness of film as an art form and film production as an economic engine. It presents quality Independent feature films, shorts, and documentary cinema within the beautiful setting of Birmingham, Michigan. The Festival will screen more than 50 films over an three day period. UFF attracts an affluent, local, national and international consumer base, while maintaining strong ties with the entertainment industry in Michigan.

Uptown Film Festival was founded in 2010 to celebrate the Michigan film industry and is held annually to recognize creativity within the State. Filmmakers have to opportunity to screen their films for new audiences and engage audiences in discussions about the content and production of their films.

Highlights of the Uptown Film Festival include:
Michigan Filmmakers Night – Kick off the festival with filmmakers and watch one of three fantastic films at the Birmingham 8 and the Uptown Palladium.
The Michigan Film Awards represent the very best that Michigan moviemaking has produced, as well as, domestic and international entries. Awards are given in multiple categories and are selected by Michigan film industry professionals and film critics.
Afterglow parties are held each night following the screenings at some of the finest Birmingham eateries.

Uptown Film Festival is presented by Oakland County, Michigan and is supported by MotorCity Casino Hotel, Olympia Entertainment, Delta, FilmDetroit, Michigan Film Office, Birmingham Principal Shopping District, Uptown Entertainment, City of Birmingham, Kinetic Media Solutions, Seyburn Knox Law Group, and Hertz Schram PC.

A completed entry form and an entry fee must accompany each film or video. Use Withoutabox's Secure Online Screeners & save money on shipping costs.


Programming decisions are made by the festival directors and our selection committee. If accepted, we will notify filmmakers by email. After acceptance, the presentational format will need to be in our office two weeks prior to festival. Be sure to indicate aspect ratio of your film/video as well as, any other special screening or presentation information we might need to know. We do not pay rental fees for submitted work that is programmed.


All selected films will go onto to compete in the Michigan Film Award Competition. The 2013 Michigan Film Awards honors the work produced in 2012-13. Awards are given in multiple categories and are selected by Michigan film industry professionals and film critics.


Due to the large number of entries received submission materials and videos will not be returned.


Uptown Film Festival is hereby granted the right to utilize an excerpt from any film submitted and accepted for exhibition at the Festival for promotional purposes.

The individual or corporation submitting the film hereby warrants that it is authorized to commit the film for screening, and understands and accepts these requirements and regulations.

The undersigned shall indemnify and hold harmless Uptown Film Festival from and against any and all claims, liabilities, losses, damages, and expenses (including but not limited to attorney's fees, and costs of the court) which may be incurred by reason of any claim involving copyright, trademark, credits, publicity, screening, and loss of or damage to the screening videos entered.
