All films selected, a decision taken by the artistic direction of the Festival, to participate in the section International Competition will receive a selection grant, an economic contribution equal to €1,000 (VAT included). |This section invites the audience to reflect on questions, themes and debates of modern day society. A minimum of 10 documentary films, Italian and international, receiving their Italian premiere, which discuss themes connected to contemporary society and have a minimum length of 50 minutes, must be completed after the 1st of January 2016.
|Biografilm Festival dedicates this section to the best biographical European cinema. A minimum of five feature films, of European production or European co-production, inspired by life stories and receiving their Italian premiere, completed after the first of January 2016.
|A minimum of five documentary and fiction films, Italian and international, of a minimum of 50 minutes, completed after the first of January 2016, with an Italian premiere, about music and/or which talks about artists or figures linked to the musical world.
|A minimum of five documentary or fiction, Italian and international, of a minimum length of 50 minutes, completed after the 1st of January 2016, with an Italian premiere. Films will discuss themes and people linked to art in all of its forms: from theatre to poetry, from comics to critics, from painting to performance.
|This category is non-competitive and dedicated to characters and stories which have significantly influenced the Italian cultural landscape.

|Best of Fest
|A minimum of five documentary films with a length of 50 minutes will be selected for this section. These will be films which in the last year have received critical acclaim from the public and critics alike at the most important international festivals. An Italian premiere is not a strict requirement for this section.
MISSION & OBJECTIVE
Biografilm Festival | International Celebration of Lives is the only international event entirely dedicated to the promotion and support of life stories through documentaries and biographical films. The aim of the Festival is to present, promote and appreciate cinema which is focussed on life stories and experiences, little and big stories which have influenced and shaped the world.
On the occasion of the 13th edition of Biografilm Festival | International Celebration of Lives, is launching its call for film proposals, both national and international, to participate in the next Festival (Bologna, 9th -19th June 2017).
ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
Since 2005 Biografilm Festival, which is directed by the cinema critic Andrea Romeo, has brought to Italy the best international biographical and documentary cinema. The Festival hosts filmmakers, directors, producers, artists, musicians and the leading figures of international contemporary culture.
The Festival takes place across central Bologna (Italy) in various locations. Locations include: the Cineteca and the two screens at Cinema Lumière, all of the outdoor spaces of the Manifattura delle Arti, Piazzetta Pier Paolo Pasolini (Biografilm Village) and also three other cinemas in the city centre: Cinema Arlecchino (Biografilm Hera Theatre), Cinema Jolly and Cinema Europa. Also during the same period the Parco del Cavaticcio (Bio Parco) offers a rich and dense programme of events and concerts open to the public, rendering it not just a food and drink area but also a space which offers afternoon activities for babies and children. Bio Parco runs for 21 days.
The musical programme of Bio Parco, organised in collaboration with Lokomotiv Club, is renowned for the presence of the best independent and alternative Italian bands (but also international groups), becoming the hub for the Bologna musical summer. Musical events are accompanied by the best local, national and international gastro cooking in the Biografilm Food District (more than 20 stalls made up of pop-up restaurants and bars). The Food District is located near to Sympò (Biografilm Church) where all of the Biografilm Food Academy events take place, exclusively reserved for the guests of Biografilm.
Furthermore, during the period of the Festival, Biografilm organises BiotoB | Doc & Biopic business meeting, an event dedicated to business to business networking for international cinema professionals. BioToB has the main objective of promoting and supporting European productions of documentaries and film biopics (Bologna, 15th – 17th June 2017).
Also within the programme are two important educational programmes: Biografilm School which is dedicated to young people under the age of 25 and Biografilm Old School, dedicated to the over 60s. Both initiatives have theorhetical and practical sessions led by cinema professionals who are attending Biografilm.

The rich cinema programme divides itself between various themed sections, tributes and retrospectives dedicated to unforgettable figures, who with their personal contribution have had the ability to change our vision of the world.
The key sections, competitive and non, are: International Competition, Biografilm Italia, Contemporary Lives, Biografilm Europe, Biografilm Music, Biografilm Art, Best of Fest, Italian Stories.
There are three juries: International Competition, Debut Feature Film and Biografilm Italia. They are made up of internationally famous directors, producers, actors, journalists, scholars, critics, cinematographers, writers, musicians etc. In the last ten years, Biografilm Festival has had the pleasure of hosting the following people as members of the juries: Ed Lachman, Nicolas Philibert, Danny Bramson, Sebastian Lelio, Alison Klayman, Paola Pallottino, Andrea Segre, Giuseppe Catozzella, Daniel Marquet, Leonard Maltin, Christian Rouet, Hussain Currimbhoy, Silvio Soldini, Elena Fortes and Antonietta De Lillo.
Biografilm Festival has earned the continuous support of numerous international personalities, culturally respected figures, who are appreciated on a humanistic level and are also part of the Honorary Board of Biografilm Festival. A few noted members of the Honorary Board include: Patricio Guzman, Matteo Garrone, Giuliano Montaldo, Joshua Oppenheimer, Hussain Currinbhoy, Amy Adams, Jaco Van Dormael, Clint Eastwood, Charlie Kaufman, Ed Lachman, Leonard Maltin, Michael Palin, Don Alan Pennebaker, Ulrich Seidl, Gianfranco Rosi, Julien Temple, Gianni Minà, Jaco Van Dormael, Cass Warner and Rebekah Maysles.
These figures are also noted for their appreciated support of the Festival: Elio Fiorucci, Margherita Hack, Judith Malina, Mario Monicelli, Diane Disney Miller, Jimi Mirikitani, Bert Stern, Saverio Tutino, Michael White and Saul Zaentz.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Applicants can submit more than one film by the same person. The inscription fee is required for each film submitted.
Inscription is deemed valid once the rules of the announcement have been adhered to, the link for the screener of the film uploaded, all of the requested information provided and the subscription fee paid via the online portal WITHOUTABOX.
Please note that WITHOUTABOX also allows Vimeo links.
All of the films which apply for the call which have dialogue in languages which are not English or Italian must by uploaded to WITHOUTABOX with English subtitles.
DVDs will be accepted, but they cannot substitute in any way an online link.
Unfortunately we are unable to return DVDs.
PLEASE NOTE: if you are submitting an Italian film, the information requested during the application stage needs to be completed in Italian.
Biografilm reserves the right to select films for a different part of the programme than that which the film has applied.
The selected films will be sent an official written communication with all the details regarding participation, applicants must respond to the letter accepting the offer within a week of receiving the mail.
The selected films must be available for the number of public screenings necesssary for the Festival and for one or two press and industry screenings during Biografilm. The selected films will also be shown in other Italian cities during the Biografilm Festival Tour, which is immediately after the main Festival. The calendar and screening times for the public, press & industry will be released at the discretion of the Programming Office and will be communicated as soon as available.
The selected films will be screened in original language with Italian subtitles and for some screenings there will also be English subtitles.
Requested formats for the screenings include:
- DCP ‘clean version’
- DCP with English subtitles
- BluRay with English subtitles available
- Quicktime ProRes 422 HQ of the film on hdd or Aspera Faspex digital delivery (ftp or other platforms of sending the file, such as Dropbox and WeTransfer are not accepted) textless, or to be more precise: without any subtitles but with original graphics and captions.
Please note: the DCP must be in 24 fps and it is advised to have a back up hard disk such as CRU with formatting EXT2/3.
Upon receiving conformation of a film’s selection for the festival, the organisation will communicate which type of format listed above will be required for the festival.
The projection materials, apart from specific cases which have been authorised by Biografilm, must be available for the whole duration of the festival and must arrive in Bologna by the 8th May 2017.

Selected films must send the following communication material for the film within five working days of the official selection mail being received and before the 10th of April 2017.
If this is not adhered to there is the risk of being excluded from the festival programme:
- Spotting list
- Subtitles list in original language and in English (with timecode in and out)
- Press book in English
- High res poster (.jpg or .tiff, 300 or more dpi)
- High res photo (.jpg or .tiff, 300 or more dpi with dimensions 1000pixels or more per side)
- Digital head shot of the director
- Filmography of the director in English (and in Italian where available)
- High resolution trailer of maximum 3 minutes (via digital delivery)
- High resolution video clips for the TV of maximum 2 minutes (via digital delivery)
- Screener online for internal use (link Vimeo, with a dedicated password which is active until the end of the Festival)
- Synopsis in Italian
- Declaration of debut film or second film
- Premiere status information
- Information regarding the film’s presence at other festivals and eventually regarding award status before Biografilm.
- Country of production / co-production (please specify the main co-producer)
- Main credits of the film (Crediti principali del film - main crew and leading actors)
Once the presence of the film at Biografilm has been confirmed, the Communications Team reserves the right to use extracts of the film of a maximum of 2 consecutive minutes for promotional use both nationally and internationally.
Once the official invite has been accepted, a selected film can’t be removed from the official programme.
Biografilm Festival does not take responsability for any eventual errors or mistakes in the material sent which accompanies the film.
It is the responsibility of producers, distributors and other subjects who present the film to guarantee their authorisation to submit the film to Biografilm Festival. By submitting the film through the current call, participants declare themselves as the rights holder to the film (also for the part of other co-filmmakers who do not intend to participate), this also includes any copyrighted material included in the film.
Biografilm cannot be held responsible for the unauthorised insertion of material protected by copyright which is included in or related to the film which is to be presented.
Biografilm reserves the right to disqualify films containing any unauthorised material which is protected by copyright.
Applying for the call and participating in Biografilm Festival means accepting and adhering to all of the current rules. In non specified cases, the final decision is at the discretion of the Biografilm Festival team.
