U.S. Narrative Feature films must be narrative works of fiction with a total run time over 45 minutes and must not have distribution in the U.S.A to be considered for competition. All Genres of feature films, including “Mockumentary” style feature films should be submitted into this category. Any feature films primarily financed and produced outside the U.S.A. should be submitted in the International Narrative Feature Film category. To be considered for this category your film must be financed in the U.S. -- U.S. Narrative Feature films with distribution can still be submitted and will be considered for the non-competitive "LIFF Picks Showcase" category. Films submitted to the U.S. Documentary category must be non-fiction with a total run time of 45 minutes or longer. U.S. Documentary feature films must have been primarily financed and produced in the U.S.A. Documentaries primarily financed and produced outside of the U.S.A. should be submitted to the International Documentary category. U.S. Mini-Documentaries under 45 minutes should be submitted to the U.S. Short Film Category. Films submitted to the U.S. Short Film category can be narrative or documentary and must have a total run time under 45 minutes with no distribution in the U.S.A. U.S. Short films must have been primarily financed and produced in the U.S.A. Any films primarily financed and produced in foreign countries should be submitted in the International Short Film Category. Student Short films (University level), Youth Films (High school and younger), Music Videos, Animation, Web Short Content/Series and experimental films should be submitted in their respective categories, regardless if they are International in origin. Films submitted to the Experimental Cinema category can be financed, produced and filmed in any country and can be any length. International submissions in foreign languages must include English subtitles in submission screeners and selected film exhibition formats. Experimental Films should experiment with story, technique, style or message in a significant and obvious way, and not fall into any other LIFF Submission category. Music Videos with a total run time over 10 minutes would be considered experimental. If LIFF determines your film does not fit this category we will re-submit your film in the appropriate category. The Youth Film category provides a platform for young aspiring high school filmmakers to present their films alongside more experienced filmmakers. Films submitted to the Youth Film category must have a total run time under 45 minutes and must be produced and filmed by students attending High School level or younger. Films produced and filmed by University level students should be submitted to the "University Film Competition" film category. All Youth and University films get a discounted submission fee. Less

Films of all lengths, genres and types are eligible for selection in the LIFF Picks category, including International Films. The "LIFF Picks Showcase" is a non-competitive category made up of films selected by the festival's film committee. Films submitted that already have distribution or are disqualified from competing in other categories of LIFF are eligible to submit to the LIFF Picks showcase category. This category is designed to showcase a unique combination of films that are carefully selected for their cinematic accomplishments and film achievements. Some selections might serve to identify the year's festival theme or help focus on a particular niche genre. International submissions in foreign languages must include English subtitles on submission screeners and selected film exhibition formats. Less

The University Film Competition is designed to showcase films from universities near and far, creating a competitive environment for studying filmmakers. Films submitted to the University Film category can be either short (under 45 minutes) or feature length (over 45 minutes), and must be produced and filmed by students attending a University level school (college) anywhere in the World. International submissions in foreign languages must have English subtitles. Narrative films as well as Documentaries are accepted in this competition. Films produced and filmed by High School level students or below should be submitted to the "Youth" film category. Less
