The sidebar features a selection of the best in contemporary global nonfiction filmmaking. We seek documentaries of all varieties, but we place a particular emphasis on issue-oriented films that address race, human rights, and the environment. This year the fest inaugurates the "Spotlight on Inspiration" Documentary Award, a juried competition that features a cash prize of $5,000; films eligible for consideration will focus on stories of hope. Audience voting determines the winner of the Leon Award for Best Documentary. There are two other juried competitions for doc features: the Interfaith Documentary Award (for films that speak to issues of faith, spirituality, and the human condition) and the St. Louis Film Critics' Joe Williams Award. We seek non-fiction films of 40 min. or less that speak to human experience ranging from the most heart-felt of human rights concerns, to uplifting tales of courage, to that of unique tales of idiosyncratic singularity among us. SLIFF is now an official Academy-sanctioned doc short subject competition, which allows the jury prize winner to be eligible for consideration for an Oscar nomination without doing a theatrical release.
